10 simple and easy garden maintenance tips
A lovely and lovingly-maintained garden will not only brighten your home but also attract birds and butterflies – a pleasant alternative to the constant drone of traffic in urban areas.
Watering
- Keep your garden beds evenly moist. Try not to overwater, but water always 1-2 times per week.
- Try to avoid watering leaves or plant heads to avoid mould formation.
- Watering early in the morning or in the evening is suggested as the soil is cooler, as less water will evaporate.
- If you are a busy working professional, try using an irrigation system. With water control they can regulate the amount of moisture in the soil.
Weeds
5. Use quality mulch as it can prevent weed seeds from sprouting.
6. Remove the attacking weeds from the source. Get to the roots using a weeding trowel.
7. Prevent weed growth by planting beds densely to minimise the space available for weeds to develop.
Lawn
8. The best time to water your lawn is 4-8am. Use an automated system to water your garden during these unsociable hours.
9. Try to protect your lawn from hot weather. Temperatures upto 26°C will promote growth and anything above 30°C will shunt growth.. Do not cut grass too short when temperatures rise.
10. Use 10-15 litres of water per sq.m as a guide while watering your lawn. Overwatering can build mould.
